UPDATE: Weekend Pondering

Here’s what I’ll be thinking about this weekend, let me know if you have any thoughts.

1) Will we still be talking about AIG with the same furor come Monday? We are. Thanks to an investigation by the CT AG, we know the bonus $$ was actually bigger than we thought. Today, Obama and Geithner announced their toxic assets plan which is keeping AIG and the lot at the top of the headlines.

2) Will Geithner rise again? Still to be seen, but looks like Wall Street is open to the assets plan announced today. Obama gave a pretty strong endorsement of his Treasury Secretary on 60 Minutes BUT Geithner still doesn’t have anywhere close to a full staff. When will the Admin get their act together and fill these spots?

3) What are Obama’s goals for his first major foreign trip as president? More on this to come, maybe it will be asked tomorrow at the presser.

4) How far will the UofA Wildcats get in the big dance? SWEET SIXTEEN so far! Not only is it great that my alma mater is in the Sweet Sixteen, but it’s all that much sweeter when Obama said they just “squeaked in” to the Big Dance. Feels good!

5) When will Lake County Indiana get its act together? Darn good question that I still don’t know the answer to. Big news this weekend in Lake County was the continuing levels of corruption that run rampant in the northern part of the county. Most of this weekend’s fury revolved around news that Rudy Clay Jr., the son of Gary mayor Rudy Clay, Sr., was yet again awarded a nearly $40,000 contract to tape and edit meetings of the Sanitary Board. This included a 3% pay increase. So the City of Gary, according to Mayor Clay, will have to cut police and fire protection and shut down the convention center because property taxes aren’t high enough, but they have the funds to give his son a renewed contract AND 3% increase? Why doesn’t this compute? AIG and Rudy Clay are really peas in a pod when it comes to wasting taxpayer money. But the populist outrage that washed over the country in regards to AIG is completely absent in the City of Gary. In that once vibrant city, it’s business as usually. Corruption is king and Rudy Clay is merely it’s crown prince.
