On June 8, 1984, fans flocked to movie theaters across the country to watch Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson don funny looking brown jumpsuits as they humorously fought ghosts around Manhattan.
Can you believe it’s been 25 years already?
Ghostbusters, I believe, is one of the defining movies of my generation. Although it premiered when I was only one year old, it set the tone for the comedies that followed. How many movies like it are still so loved and revered today? Not many. The Ghostbusters franchise has endured with a 1989 sequel, Ghostbusters 2, numerous cartoon spinoffs, a video game for the original Nintendo, and coming on June 16th another video game that has been dubbed the “third movie” by castmembers - most of whom reunite to provide voiceovers of their classic characters.
During the introductions of the bridal party at a wedding I attended this weekend guess what song was playing? The Ghostbusters theme.
The nostalgia has even pushed Hollywood to start working on a script for an actual third movie - 25 years after the original debuted!
Even one of our biggest stars agrees that Ghostbusters is totally awesome - albeit with a few qualifiers.
When entering the White House’s Northwest Gate, visitors must pass through a turnstile with a light that turns from red to green before allowing you to pass. I would usually joke with my guests as they passed through, “Light is green, trap is clean.” Most got the joke, some didn’t.
One that immediately got it was Stephen Colbert. He perked up, looked at me, and said, “Ghostbusters?”
“Yep, the greatest movie ever made.”
“Well, certainly the greatest comedy about the paranormal.”
“Anything else?”
“Made in the 80s.”
